Dinner and a Movie Final

Artist Statement
My intent with this photograph is to display an arial view looking down at the constant flow of the ocean. I chose multiple bowls to represent consistency and eternity, reflecting the rhythmic, endless motion of the sea. I flipped some of the bowls over to signify disturbance over calm. I incorporated jewelry to create a sense of something foreign and disruptive but jewelry also represents beauty within the disorder. This piece explores tapping into another source of spiritual connection to nature. There is a duality inherent to the nature of the ocean: the chaos and calm. In my experience surfing, I've noticed the how the waves rise and fall in a beautiful cyclical pattern; this mirrors the use of repetition in the bowls, silverware, and jewelry.

Reflection statement

The three sculptures visually communicate deconstruction in a simple world. While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on asymmetry because I didn't want the sculptures to look predictable. I decided to include hot glue to give a stringy effect and draw the viewer's attention aside from the structure itself. I was not producing the results I wanted so I started to add materials like the string and masking tape to see if it would change the overall look of the sculpture. I want to keep exploring abstract and conceptual ideas. I want to learn more about the way I perceive things and why I make certain decisions. This piece allowed me to explore my mind and what I can do with materials I am unfamiliar with. The making of this work exposed new ideas such as experimenting with materials first rather than planning everything out.
